Writing Contest for Moms

I ran across a link to this writing contest at another blog and thought I would pass it on. Letters From The Heart is hosting a writing contest. If you follow the link, all of the rules and guidelines are there.

Basically, they are looking for heartfelt letters from mothers to daughters. Though it's not exclusive to traditional mothers and daughters, it can be from mothers to girls they mentor, adopted daughters, daughters-in-law, or spiritual daughters. I thought I'd pass it on here, as I know a lot of the bloggers who visit are moms and writers.

I hope it's of use, and good luck to all of the entrants.

Hi Laura,

No problem at all - it looks like a really interesting book.

Thanks for stopping by.

Years ago, someone gave me a book of letters from famous writers to their mothers. At first I thought it was one of those rather sentimental coffee table books, and did not bother to read it, but when I eventually picked it up, I found it riveting. I'm not a Hemingway fan (to put it mildly), but I found myself utterly charmed by his letter to his mother, which I thought was wonderfully gentle and understated. She had written to him that her ladies' reading circle did not think much of one of his books, and his reply was that he was actually glad to hear this; that he would feel very silly if they had liked it. There were other wonderful letters, too, and I just wish I'd kept this book. This does sound like an interesting competition, though, and I just wish it was possible to enter more than one letter!

Hi Mary,

That sounds like an interesting book! I always think these things will be too sentimental for me, and then I get sucked in anyway... like the Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul, that one really was a great compilation.

This book is supposed to have celebrity letters as well as contest winners, so something for everyone.

Hi Astairesteps,

Thanks for stopping in - this one looks like a fun writing exercise, I still haven't decided if I'm going to try it or not.

I like your blog, it's nice to get the chance to read poetry I haven't seen in a while. Will you be having literary discussion on the poems you host? That would be lots of fun.

sorry, that should have been poems you post'...

merry,

what do you mean about "having literary discussion"?

Hi again,

Literary discussions - just that. The same way you might discuss a poem in a classroom setting, just including your own thoughts on the poem after posting it, or kicking off a discussion in your comments.

I know a few bloggers that would really love that. Believin, who I have blogrolled, teaches lit to third and fourth year students in singapore. She's fabulous in a literary discussion and she also happens to be a poet. (that blog of hers is newer, she has a few of them but that's the only one I have blogrolled)

We've done the same type of thing with book discussions - I hosted a bookclub blog some time ago on The Mists of Avalon
