Setting the Mood

I’ve been taking stock of my writing area, lately. I don’t have an office specifically for writing – I wish. Instead I have my desk in my living room. It’s my favorite room in the house and it doesn’t have a television, so the kids are less likely to hang out here. But I’ve started thinking about making, at least the little area where my desk is, a little more me.

The room is.... well, what my husband refers to as gaudy Italian... but he’s like a cabin so I don’t think his version of taste counts... but the colors are subdued, moreso than I’d like for my writing area. Paint is out of the question, because the bright hues I’d like won’t match the front room or dining room couches. So I started thinking of little ways that I could decorate just the area where my desk is. The first think I thought of was my lamp. It’s a standard, white ceramic affair, but I’d kind of like to do something a little different.

Maybe a hanging light something with a colorful shade – I’m loud and obnoxious, sue me... I thought that might be a good way to clear off some of the surface space and allow me more room to pile my crap... er, umn, you know put gracious knickknacks... okay, that’s a lie, more room to pile my papers is pretty much what would happen.

Maybe, though, I could get a more slender based desk lamp that would be better for the limited space I have here, and still give me good lighting... I’ve got kid pictures scattered around by my piano, but I’m thinking of picking up a colorful print or maybe doing a dream board to hang on the wall space above.

What about you guys? Do you have a whole room for your writing, or just any little space you could fit in a desk? And have you set a mood, or do your just get down to work and not care about your surroundings?

You would laugh at me! My writing space is the left side corner of our sofa, right next to the bay windows. This is my spot. I get very territorial if anyone sits there. I sit on the sofa and type with my laptop on my lap. That's my writing space!!

I love color! I'm addicted to it. This is my writing space. I just built it a few months ago!

Ello,

I most certainly would not laugh at you. I just got my desk two years ago this coming January... Before that, I wrote in notebooks at the kitchen table, or in waiting rooms while my kids were in lessons or appointments... then I copy typed on the family computer while they were asleep...

Your corner is a sight better than that, and if you're comfy, it's all that counts.

Hi Spy,

I do, too! My kitchen is bright yellow and I painted grape vines all along near the ceiling in bright lavendar, and greens... and I have these really great plates on the wall, all fruit and villa motif in bright colors... my husband hates that room, he thinks it's tacky... it's totally, me, though... my favorite spot in the house.

I didn't comment when I stopped at your link, but that's an awesome room!!! I love the curtains and the way your cornered it off.. did you ever put out all of the candles?

Hi Merry:
I have an office with two sunny windows--but it's REALLY the dining room, so I can be in the thick of things with my kids in and out. However . . . my space speaks to me creatively. I have about 15 Buddha statues staring at me. One St. Joseph. My lucky clock (long story from my divorce). A St. Jude candle. Other candles. Quotes from the Bible and Buddha and writers. Pictures of my beloved late Grandma, and my kids and family. When I sit down, it's sort of like this signal to my brain--this is MY space where I create and do something special.

Hey Moonie,

I haven't been writing as much in the past week or so... for obvious reasons, but I'm still hoping to crank it out.

There have been some personal challenges here, too, that I might be posting about soon... but I'm going to finish, either flippin' way. Say a prayer for me, would you?

Hi Erica,

Your room sounds awesome... and St. Jude is one of my favorites... Patron Saint of Lost Causes and Hopeless Cases... he's the catchall for the downtrodden. I have a statue of him on the shelf above my kitchen sink.

I have an office with an outside door and western exposure. It's actually a very nice room and neatly placed so I can hear what's going on when I need to.

I too have lots of religious items: a cross, a rosary, Buddha, and items from around the world, mementos like all my con nametags and gifts from friends--the latest being a card congratulating me on the sale of my latest story.

It's warm and cozy in here and it's my favorite room in the house. Except for my living room when the kids are hanging out there with me.

Hi SS&S,

Your room sounds fantastic, too. I love getting to hear about or see people's spaces, it makes you feel like you get an insiders glimpse into what they're about... unfortunately mine would likely say I'm scattered at the moment:-)
